Come along for a pre-Thanksgiving “Turkey Trot”!
Nehantic State Forest has miles of good dirt roads on rolling hills. Whips can do anywhere from 2 miles to 10 if they choose, mile markers will be posted, average distance is 5 miles. The first (and last) mile are on a lightly traveled dead end road. Plenty of parking at Cynthia Bliven’s Woodland Farm, where we will also join for lunch. Bring your lunch or a dish to share, and a chair. If you forget to bring food, just bring your appetite, there is always plenty to go around! Turn right onto Route 138 (South and East direction) and travel 7.5 miles. and bear onto Beach Pond Road/ CT-Route 165. Travel around 4.5 miles and turn LEFT onto Escoheag Hill Road and travel 1.5 to 2 miles to to LaGrande Reynolds Horsemen’s Area on the left. We will be having lunch in the pavillion, so park with walking distance of that. (Once you’re on Route 165 and cross the RI border, you will go up a hill, and then level out, and then go down a hill. Escoheag Hill Road comes up fast on the left — so know that you’ll see a horse farm on the right, and then a sign for Stepping Stone Farm and then the road will be there on the left).

September 8 – Club Meeting: Equine Nutrition Club meeting on Saturday, September 8, at Hebron Fire Station #2, 663 Church St (Rt 85) in Hebron. Come and talk with Tiffany Wyman about equine nutrition. Perhaps your horse is getting on in years. Tiffany can help with info about the older horse’s nutritional needs. Those of you with youngsters have different issues. Be prepared with questions with Tiffany. Brief meeting will follow the presentation. NO POTLUCK.
Sunday, Aug 12 – Driving Derby: Mitchell Farm, Salem CT
CT Valley’s Driving Derby competition consists of three rounds over a course consisting of pairs of cones and marathon-type obstacles in a . Each driver will be timed through a numbered course of obstacles/gates in the proper direction and in numerical order to the finish line. Total time determines placings and the lowest time wins.
We are offering both training level and preliminary level. Drivers may enter horses of any breed and size, from minis to drafts. $50 per entry. Helmets & Coggins/rabies required. Groom required for all turnouts except single mini or single small pony. Gates open at 9 am, mandatory driver’s meeting at 9:30 am, first competitor on course at 10 am. Club meeting on Saturday, August 4 at the East Haddam Grange Hall. Carol Martin, owner of Westfield Whip Manufacturing Company, will talk about the history of whipmaking in Westfield, share videos and stories, and bring some of her whips for show and tell. Club meeting on Saturday, March 3 at the East Haddam Grange Hall. Hebron Fire Chief Nick Wallick will do a presentation on Barn Fire Safety, discussing ways to keep people and animals safe and things to think about before there is an emergency. Brief meeting will follow the presentation. NO POTLUCK.

We will be having our first meeting of 2018 on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the East Haddam Grange Hall. NO POTLUCK. But there will be beverages and desserts. So please come and share your winter stories with us.
The agenda for the night will be as follows:
1) A discussion of the calendar for the year. This includes meeting dates; drive dates; events dates and coordination of all of those dates with significant dates from other clubs, etc.
2) A discussion of how to keep our club relevant and lively. As with all clubs, there are ups and downs to membership and participation. Other clubs in the region has expressed the same concerns. Maybe we can run cooperative events. Combined programs, etc.
3) Other. Anything other is open to discussion. Bring your ideas, solutions, etc. If you have a complaint, bring it along with possible solutions. Spring will be here quickly. Let’s prepare for our new year of horse adventures.
