The Elms is the location of the Coaching event. It was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the Pennsylvania coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'Asnieres (c.1750) outside Paris. Construction of The Elms was completed in 1901 at a cost reported at approximately $1.4 million.

Other Info
On Saturday, August 22 the Coaches line up on the grounds of the Elms in Newport, Rhode Island for a beautiful Coaching Demonstration. It starts somewhere around 10AM. The whips are introduced, and we are given a description of each coach and team. Many of our members try to attend this spectacular event. They bring cameras, chairs, blankets and picnic baskets. Some folks even dress up for the occasion. At the end of the demonstration we will gather on the steps of the Elms and decide on a place to have lunch. The Atlantic Beach Club worked well for us in the past. Transportation is on your own. Questions? I’ll do my best.
